Help desk
--------------
A performative action by Rachel Erdos & Ori Lenkinski
We all need a little help, no? Help Desk is an assistive installation in which participants can request, receive, offer and provide help. The work looks at who helps who, what help is given, how can we help you? Help Desk is an invitation to join a community of helpers and helpees in real time, here & now.
How It Works Upon arriving to the Help Desk event, audience members receive an intake form. Once they have filled out the form, they approach the Help Desk. The form is processed into three parts - two parts stay with the Helpers (Rachel &
Ori) while one part returns to them, a sticker to be worn throughout the event, upon which they have listed the types of help they believe they can provide to
fellow attendees. Once all the guests are processed, the Helpers prepare the Help Board. This board is covered in the types of help needed by guests and
their names do not appear on the ads, there is a system in place where the Helpers (Ori & Rachel) know discreetly who wrote each one.
When a guest approaches the board and wants to help someone, they tear a perforated number off the bottom of the ad, bring it to the Help Desk and the Helpers locate the person in need. The Helpers then conduct an introduction.
When this experiment was carried out in A-Genre Festival 2022, Tel Aviv, Israel these are the types or help people asked for: Good local wines, Recommendations for massage / treatments for aches and pains, Organizing their google calendar, Tips in improving self confidence, Someone to explain them the other art works in the festival, Babysitting, A tent.
Let the helping begin!
This event can take any amount of time from 45 minutes to a whole day, or over a few days. It could be in the foyer in between shows in a festival, or during a mingling event with wine etc. `it could be the beginning of a conference or event or an event on its own. We can host from 10 people upwards. The last time we hosted it there were 120 people.
